Check Engine Light

Don’t Panic When Your “Check Engine” Light Comes On

When your check engine light comes on it’s always when you least expect it. It seems to happen when you are either in a hurry or when you are on your way to having a great weekend at the beach.

Either way there is no need to panic, pull over to the side of the road and call a tow truck. It does mean that something is going on and needs to be checked. But there is no need to panic.

It could be as simple as a loose gas cap so you should check this yourself first. Or it could be a serious misfiring engine.

There are many reasons why a check engine light may come on so don’t wait too long before you get it checked out. And please don’t ignore it because it could cost you in the long run.

The check engine light is part of the onboard diagnostics (OBD) system. These systems have been around since the 1980’s.

This OBD system simply monitors your vehicle’s performance. This includes things like engine speed, ignition timing, different sensors, misfiring engine, power train, the electronic control system and much more.
